Social Enterprise Champion

As the Scottish Government’s economic and community development agency for the Highlands and Islands, HIE wants to help build a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable region, attracting more people to live, work, study, invest and visit.

At the heart of this are strong, capable and resourceful communities. HIE has successfully combined economic and community development in a largely rural economy for over 55 years, including delivering national programmes such as the Scottish Land Fund. During this time, they have pioneered community-led development and remain at the forefront of enabling a strong social enterprise sector.

Their place-based approach supports communities to create growth, for example through the acquisition and development of income generating assets; or to exploit the many opportunities presented by the transition to net zero; or from the region’s unique culture and heritage, including Gaelic. HIE’s support and approach enables communities to play a pivotal role in developing new enterprises, jobs and housing – all key to talent attraction and retention
